POESIE
da I
figli della terra
La casa
di pietra
Ho
rivisto
dopo
anni
la casa
di pietra
avvolta
dal sole
e dalla
quiete.
Il
tempo
nel
silenzio
ha
scolpito
la sua
storia
sulla
facciata esterna
per
offrirla in dono
agli
occhi curiosi
dei
forestieri dell’estate.
Anche
il vecchio platano
continua
a dipingere
il suo
quadro
con
l’ombra fresca
che da
lunghi anni
regala
alle
pietre arroventate
e ai
resti
di una
porta
ormai
consunta.
Il
sedile
è
ancora lì
testimone
nella
sua dignità
di
pietra.
Non c’è
più
colei
che dal
volto bruno
e dai
capelli bianchi
scrutava
il cielo
a modo
di preghiera…
Tutto
aveva un sapore
di
storia vissuta,
di
rimpianto.
Ho
rivisto la vita
in un
ciuffo d’erba
cresciuto
per miracolo
in una
crepa.
Ho
parlato con le pietre
della
bellezza
della
vita
e
dell’amore.
Mio padre
Mio
padre comunicava
con i
suoi silenzi,
la
profondità
del suo
sguardo,
la
curva
del suo
corpo
ormai
malato.
Mio
padre scriveva
sulla
faccia del mondo
con i
colpi
lenti
ritmici
del suo
bastone.

THE HOUSE OF STONE
I’ve seen again
years later
the house of stone
wrapped in the sun
and in silence.
Time
silently
has chiselled
its story
on its outer face
offering it as a gift
to the curious eyes
of summer visitors.
The old plane-tree too
still paints
its picture
with its cool shadow
which for long years
it has given
to the burning stones
and the remains
of a door
long worn out.
The seat
a stony witness
in its dignity
is still there.
She is no longer there
she who darked-faced
and white-haired
questioned the sky
as if in prayer…
Everything had an air
of past history,
of regret.
I’ve seen life again
in a tuft of grass
growing miraculously
in a crevice.
I’ve spoken to the stones
about beauty
and life
and love.

RETURNING
I

moss or soil
II
unaware of my demise
light will bear me off
my lips uttering not moans
but verse
III
I want the children beside me
the mule in the stable
chicks beneath my bed
violets in the beaker
IV
I will return
in the desires of mothers
in the passion of lovers
in the morning clouds

WILL
for Moma
Dimić
I
I will leave the sparrows
my pent up feelings
to warm the nest
to protect their kind
II
to the hawk I leave my vision
and extent of fantasy
to inspire their flight
to gladden the dusk
III
to the oak and the turkey oak
I leave the intimacy of my works
to help them bear iciness
and barbarianism
IV
to the vineyard my unripe ideas I leave
the sun will mellow them
into aglianico
and health will be drunk
V
to the moon an unborn sentiment
as enchantment and resurrection must it be hatched
with the energy of science
and the authenticity of the simple
VI
to fire and snow
I leave the impetus of language
and the rime of its lyrics
they will fuel tenderness
VII
to river and stream
I leave the fluidity of signs
they will flow as long as humanity
defends the universe
VIII
to the heavens and children
the colours of writing I leave
with its rhymes and assonances
and its vortices of innocence
IX
to thin air I leave sorrow
blood clots
the anxiety of labour pains
and restlessness
X
to poets I leave the dilemma
the joviality of the journey
and the purity of the pages
to bequeath to posterity
XI
to words I leave a caress
as sweet as acacia honey
grateful for their loyalty
and the battle

THE COUNTRY BRIDE
I
I thought the firmament shed its leaves
instead it threw flames
soul on the anvil
horses at full tilt
II
she crushed salt in the mortar
watered the rose garden
patched up her life
thinking of her man in New York
III
who knows how he spent his nights!
were his women white or black?
sulking and desire
washed away by the river
IV
the ship was brimming with peasants
sad days on the ocean
hope clenched between teeth
guilt under their fingernails
V
how to reconcile feelings
with water?
they'd had to rip themselves from the land
to reach the new world
VI
the child in the womb
challenged destiny
she sang songs
that drifted through the woods
VII
the sheets were candid
on the dry grass
the mare impatient
under the elm tree
VIII
his letters bore witness to tenderness
full-blooded sentences
she kept his hand organ in the chest
the candle above the hearth
IX
at dusk she gazed afar
he would not return from the vineyard
maybe he was down the docks chatting
sniffing tobacco
X
“America is far away
and I am not crossing the water”
she used to say to herself
the country bride with her bodice and knife
XI
at night she yearned
kissed the children
said her rosary
tossed a shoe at the cricket
XII
year after year the dollars arrived
then the thread was broken
the sickle severed bride from groom
and silence reigned

freedom means
rising at the crack of dawn
to wonder at flamingos in flight
wander across meadows
seeking wild fennel

overwhelmed with joy

freedom is emotion
carnal delight
a canticle with a safe-conduct

I
padre
te ahogabas en la sangre
mordías la arena
te repatriaste con la guerra
en las pupilas
luego los campos se cubrieron
y brotó la esperanza
con el tiempo expiaste
los horrores y la audacia
inmóvil relatabas
las danzas tribales
el espejismo del agua
de ti ha quedado
el canto africano
y el retrato
II
América estaba en tus sueños
te manejabas con la lengua
y los proyectos
por la noche vagabas por el desierto
abrevabas el camello y el dromedario
al alba trotabas
con el caballo y la alforja
III
tus dedos eran plantas aromáticas
el busto el cauce del torrente
las piernas muñones
reliquias bélicas
IV
me cubrías con fresas
y violetas
me alegrabas
con caracoles y grillos
V
no estabas solo en el foso
el mal sin embargo era tuyo
los huesos se disgregaban
por la impotencia y la cólera
VI
he aprendido de ti
a dosificar las palabras
tu silencio
era desesperación
y consuelo
VII
no has rozado
las mejillas de tu padre
lo admirabas en el horizonte
con el cigarro
y el chaleco
VIII
cariño
en la trinchera los recuerdos eran dulces
entre granadas y balas
divisaba las facciones de tu madre
en sueños me ocupaba de la cosecha
en África el deseo era brasa
tú eras ya criatura en lo íntimo

suena fuerte el tambor esta mañana
es la llamada de los caídos
la ola caliente
una señal de paz
